To travel the world or settle down, that is the question.

Dear Therapist Within:

People dream about getting married, starting a family, making a lot of money, living their lives with ease. But even though I’m just out of high school, I can’t help but feel that that is not the road I want to go down on. It seems completely nonsensical, settling down and only being in one place for your entire life. I have been hesitant to tell my boyfriend what I think about it, as he has expressed interest in the exact same thinking pattern. Is it so bad that I want to drop off the face of the earth, go run around a few country’s without a care in the world for a while, then just settle down and have enough to live off of? I don’t want more than I need, and I’m just fine with getting off the bare minimum. Spending money is a luxury I’ve never had, and don’t want after seeing how obsessed people are over it. Is it just me having an overactive imagination, or just being stressed and wanting to get away from it all?

ANSWER: SOME people dream about getting married, etc., etc., etc. OTHERS dream about running around the world without a care in the world for awhile, exploring life, reading books, doing something they love even though it doesn’t pay very well.Neither is right or wrong!!  I applaud you for marching to a different drummer. GO FOR IT!!! You can always change your mind – after you have stretched it a whole lot with new exciting experiences. Time to talk to your boyfriend to find out if each of you wants totally different things, or if deep down inside, he would like to join you on your continental escapade!
